Northbound and southbound Interstate 35 closed in Duluth

Motorists should take alternate routes

DULUTH, Minn. —MnDOT has closed portions of I-35 in Duluth as follows.

Motorists should take alternate routes.


  • Northbound I -35 is closed between Highway 194 and 26th Avenue East. Motorists are being diverted to Mesaba Avenue/Superior Street.


  • I-35 southbound is closed between Lake Avenue and 26th Avenue east.
  • The southbound I-35 entrance ramps at 21st Avenue East and 26th Avenue East are closed to prevent access to southbound I-35.
  • The southbound entrance ramps at Lake Avenue and at 5th Avenue West are open.

MnDOT maintenance crews are being dispatched to open suspected plugged drains in the tunnels, which may be causing the flooding.

The freeway will reopen as soon as possible after the water recedes.
