Orange barrels on a highway

Work continues on west pier of Hwy 53 relocation project

Time-lapse video of construction progress available

VIRGINIA, Minn. – Crews poured the first above-ground concrete for the west pier last week on the Highway 53 relocation project. Workers also began installing reinforcing bar (rebar) for the next vertical section of the west pier.

Rebar is the green-coated steel that forms a steel skeleton for concrete construction. In the coming weeks, crews will build concrete forms and install rebar for the east pier footing as well.

Rock excavation is complete for the west bridge abutment, and crews are building concrete forms and installing rebar. The project expects to pour concrete for the abutment on May 9.

Work also has continued on the Highway 53 and Highway 135 interchange. This effort includes construction of a rock embankment for several ramps on the interchange. Crews also began excavation work this week for city sanitary sewer lines near Second Avenue.

Note: The project webcam, accessible from the project website, currently is not working. It should be repaired this week. However, a time-lapse video, as well as new photos, are available. To see the video and photos, and for more information, visit the website at www.mndot.gov\hwy53relocation. For questions or concerns about the project, call the project hotline at 218-820-8532.
