Highway 38 detour ends Sept. 14

Duluth, Minn. – A lengthy detour that was required during a major resurfacing and drainage improvement project on Highway 38 just north of Grand Rapids will be lifted Friday, Sept. 14. Motorists may encounter temporary, single lane closures on Hwy 38 through the end of October, however there will be no more detours after Sept. 14.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation wants to thank motorists and residents along Highway 38 for their patience during this project.
Project improvements included:

  • Pavement resurfacing
  • Two Intersection improvements in conjunction with Itasca County at County Roads 48 and 49
  • Raising the grade near milepost 26.0
  • Replacing 41 culverts and lining nine additional culverts
  • Lowering the crest of Highway 38 at Wildernessa Road (County Road 308)
