Interim solutions

Even though the RCI can be constructed relatively quickly, it will be 2020 before the project process can reach the point of construction. This gives the opportunity for some interim solutions. Any interim solution would be in place for less than a year.
During meetings within MnDOT and with representatives of Nashwauk, Itasca County, the state, and law enforcement, several possibilities were discussed. The possibilities were further narrowed due to feasibility of being done within a month or two and the local wants and needs.  A few of the options are as follows:

1: Close the median crossing

Eastbound traffic would have to go to the next exit to enter Nashwauk. Anyone going south out of Nashwauk would have to turn right and head westbound on Hwy 169. There is a crossroad 1.3 miles to the west where drivers could make a U-turn to go eastward. Otherwise, the other exit on the east side of Nashwauk could be used.

Barriers would be placed to close the median entirely.

2: Realign left-turn traffic on Hwy 169 so the sight-angle is better, eliminate the left-turn on Hwy 65

Left turns into Nashwauk from Hwy 169 would be realigned for sight angle. Left turns out of Nashwauk would be eliminated.

3. Provide advance intersection warning signs with 60 mph speed advisory on Hwy 169

Signs placed on Hwy 169 in advance of the intersection.

4. Do nothing: Nothing would be done before the RCI project in 2020

Closing the median entirely would provide the safest temporary option but would be the most inconvenient. Especially for those living in that section of Nashwauk. Realigning left-turn traffic would help with the view angle but is inconvenient for some as well. Advance signs don’t address the main issue and may be ignored. We hope to have an option chosen during the month of August for quick implementation. MnDOT would like to know what your preferred option is. You are encouraged to let your County or City representatives know or to contact MnDOT by mail or email.
