Innovative crosswalk signal activated on Hwy 197 in Bemidji
Motorists should yield to pedestrians in crosswalk
BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation encourages pedestrians near Bemidji State University to use the new crossing signal on Highway 197/Bemidji Avenue between 16th and 17th Streets.
“The innovative signal uses an irregular flash pattern that is similar to the emergency flashers on police vehicles,” said MnDOT traffic engineer Michelle Rognerud-Adams. “But pedestrians need to do their part and wait for motorists to stop before attempting to cross.”
MnDOT urges motorists to stop for crossing pedestrians, watch for pedestrians at all times and avoid distracted driving. Pedestrians are encouraged to look before you cross, make yourself visible to drivers and avoid dangerous and distracted behaviors.
