TRAVEL ADVISORY: Hwy 220 in northwest Minnesota now open to traffic
Bemidji, Minn. – (3:00 p.m.) Highway 220 from Highway 1 to the junction of Highways 220 and 317 is now open to traffic according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The road was temporarily closed due to flooding and water damage. Highway 220 will remain closed between 320th street northwest and Highway 11. Bridge construction work is in progress. Motorists are encouraged to visit www.511mn.org to view the detour map and check road conditions.
Although the road is open, motorists should slow down, remain cautious and obey traffic signs. MnDOT crews took advantage of the road closures by conducting routine maintenance activities which will prevent any further impact to motorists in the near future. Highways impacted by floods were inspected for damage and safety prior to opening.
Areas that have water on the road or are closed because of flooding are marked on MnDOT’s road conditions map www.511mn.org. When a road is closed it is illegal to travel in that area. Motorists can be fined up to $1,000 and/or 90 days in jail. In addition, if travelers need to be rescued from a closed road, other expenses and penalties will apply.
