Hwy 2 Kennedy Bridge

East Grand Forks

Bridge evaluation

The Hwy 2 Kennedy Bridge over the Red River, built in 1963, is was evaluated to determine the long-term plan for maintaining this important four-lane crossing. A range of options from rehabilitation of the bridge to potential replacement was studied. Input from local residents was used to help define the objectives and its potential impacts were identified by understanding the needs of its users. See the project fact sheet (PDF) for more information.

After thoroughly studying all options a redesign of the bridge deck was selected. It is a lower cost alternative, yet offers the benefit of increasing safety for all users: motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. The final design features a complete deck replacement which will maintain four lanes of traffic and also adds an additional separate walkway for bicyclists and pedestrians.
