Plan for Hwy 10 traffic changes in Elk River as project enters final stage of 2017 construction October 2

ST CLOUD, Minn. – Motorists who travel Highway 10 near Lake Orono in west Elk River should plan for several traffic changes beginning Monday, October 2, as the 2017-2018 Highway 10 Lake Orono bridge replacement project enters its final stage of 2017 construction.

Motorists should plan for the following traffic changes beginning October 2:

  • The Highway 10/Joplin Street intersection, located on the south side of Highway 10 directly across from 185th Avenue, will temporarily close. Motorists should use the Highway 10/Waco Street intersection, located one mile west of Highway 10/Joplin Street/185thAvenue, or seek their own alternate routes.
  • The Highway 10/Joplin Street/185thAvenue median will close.
  • The Highway 10/185th Avenue intersection, located on the north side of Highway 10 directly across from Joplin Street, will open as a right-in/right-out only.
  • Two lanes of westbound Highway 10 will remain open and will be moved to the westbound side of the road; the single lane of eastbound Highway 10 will remain on the eastbound side of the road.
  • All lanes and intersecting roads along Highway 10 are scheduled to open in late-October.
  • All local businesses will remain accessible throughout the Highway 10 Lake Orono bridge replacement project.

The temporary traffic changes are needed while crews reconstruct the Highway 10/Joplin Street intersection, located on the south side of Highway 10, and complete work on the median between the eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 10.

The work and closures are part of the 2017-2018 Highway 10 Lake Orono Bridge replacement project in Elk River. When complete in fall 2018, the project will replace the 75-year-old Highway 10 bridge spanning Lake Orono with a new, modern bridge; resurface Highway 10 between Joplin Street NW and Xenia Ave NW; improve the Highway 10/Joplin Street/185th Avenue intersection; construct a new trail between Gary Street NW and Simonet Drive NW; install new drainage infrastructure and make other improvements.
