Highway 371 Hackensack to Backus closes, detour begins Sept. 4
St. Cloud, Minn. – Motorists who travel Highway 371, between Cass County Road 40 in Hackensack and the northern Highway 371/Highway 87 intersection in Backus, should plan their travel as the road closes to through traffic beginning Tuesday, Sept. 4.
The project’s first lane closures were originally scheduled to begin Aug. 20, but were postponed so all work and required lane or road closures will occur after the 2018 Labor Day holiday weekend.
After the road closes to through traffic Sept. 4, a signed detour will direct motorists along County Road 40/19 west of Hackensack, Highway 64, and Highway 87 west of Backus. Motorists should follow the signed detour, or plan their own alternate routes. The official detour is 30 miles long, and adds 23 miles to the trip.
All businesses and local residences located along Highway 371 will remain accessible throughout the project. Motorists should contact local businesses directly to get the best direct route to their individual locations, as Highway 371 north of Backus will be impassable at different locations as the project progresses.
All lanes of Highway 371 between Highway 87 and Cass County Road 40 will open by late October.
The closure and detour are part of a major project to reconstruct and improve Highway 371 between Highway 87/Washburn Avenue in Backus and Cass County Road 40 in Hackensack, replace underground pipes and make other improvements while Highway 371 is closed. When complete, the project will result in a smoother ride with a long-life pavement along 7.5 miles of Highway 371, extend the life of the roadway and improve drainage in the area.
