Hwy 74 temporarily closed north of Beaver in Whitewater Wildlife Area
ROCHESTER, Minn. – A 7-mile gravel stretch of Highway 74 north of Beaver in Winona County is temporarily closed due to spring thaw conditions, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
This portion of Highway 74 was closed today, March 15, due to poor road conditions caused by the spring thaw. Rain is forecasted through much of this week. The additional moisture will likely compound the poor road conditions.
The stretch from Beaver (Winona County Road 30) to Weaver (Wabasha County Road 26) is MnDOT’s only gravel road and is within the Whitewater Wildlife Area north of Elba.
Whitewater State Park is south of the road closure. The area is a prime place for bird watchers.
MnDOT workers placed barricades on the road and road signs warn motorists of the closure. The closure will continue until conditions improve. Last year, the road was reopened April 17. In 2014, it was reopened on May 9.
