Short-term lane closures, flaggers planned March 21 at Hwy 63 Red Wing Bridge
ROCHESTER, Minn. – Motorists traveling on the Highway 63 Eisenhower Bridge at Red Wing will encounter afternoon lane closures and flaggers on Monday, March 21 while work is done in preparation for the bridge replacement project, according to the Minnesota and Wisconsin departments of transportation.
A WisDOT crew will be doing pavement borings for the Wisconsin approach roads. The work will provide MnDOT designers with additional information for the roadway and pavement design. Work is expected to begin at 1 p.m., Monday and should be completed by 3 p.m., weather permitting. If work is completed sooner, traffic controls will be lifted earlier.
Short delays are likely during the work, while motorists wait for their lane of traffic to be directed through the work zone. Flaggers and lane closures are being established for the safety of motorists and the workers.
MnDOT is working on finalizing the design of the project along with developing construction staging and timing details. The aesthetics for the project are taking shape and the right-of-way acquisition process is underway. The final design of the project will be wrapping up late 2016, with the project still on schedule to begin construction in the spring of 2017.
The project will replace the existing Eisenhower Bridge over the Mississippi River with a new bridge. In addition, the Wisconsin and Minnesota bridge approaches will be improved. The project will construct a jug handle intersection on Highway 63 at 825th St. on the Wisconsin approach. Improvements on the Minnesota approach include reconfiguration of the approach roadways into a buttonhook intersection with a slip ramp into downtown Red Wing, along with replacement of the Highway 63 bridge over Highway 61.

MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
