Hwy 74 closure, detour begins Oct. 24 for soil drilling near Whitewater State Park
ROCHESTER, Minn. – Highway 74 will be closed and detoured near Whitewater State Park beginning Oct. 24 with the detours in place for two four-day intervals to accommodate workers and equipment doing geotechnical soil borings at culvert sites, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The road closure will allow crews to do geotechnical soil borings adjacent to WPA-era large culvert structures that are in need of rehabilitation. The soil boring information will be used in design of the rehabilitation, which is in the planning stages.
Motorists using Highway 74 between St. Charles and Elba will be detoured on Winona County Road 39.
The detour will be in place Oct. 24 to Oct. 27 and Oct. 31 to Nov. 3. Traffic barriers will remain in place and the road will be closed Monday through Thursday each time. In between the two drilling periods, traffic will be reopened later Thursday through Sunday.
Access to Whitewater State Park will be from the north end of the detour during the work that begins Oct. 24. During the work that begins Oct. 31, access to the park will be open, but the point will vary depending on what site the drillers will be performing the soil borings.
MnDOT urges motorists to follow these recommendations in work zones:
• Stay alert
• Watch for signs, equipment and workers
• Minimize distractions, such as using cell phones, eating or drinking
• Avoid tailgating
• Follow posted speed limits and directional signs
• Stay in one lane while driving through a work zone
