Alternative Routes to Duluth

2012 construction

Traffic impacts:

  • Northbound I-35 between Grand Avenue and 46th Avenue West and southbound I-35 between Central Avenue and 40th Avenue West is restricted to a single lane. Traffic will also be restricted to a single lane near Garfield Avenue and 27th Avenue West. These lane restrictions are necessary as crews install concrete median barrier. The lane closures will be in effect for two to three weeks.

Remaining work includes installation of median barrier and signs, fiber optic installation, bridge painting and deck repair on the ramp from northbound I-535 to northbound I-35.

Trip Planning Information

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead this summer to avoid the heaviest travel times on Interstate 35 or use an alternative route — especially during holiday or major event weekends.

Peak traffic levels on I-35 between the Twin Cities and Duluth typically occur between noon and 8 p.m. on Fridays and between noon and 6 p.m. on Sundays.
