Enhance 694 project in Vadnais Heights, Arden Hills begins April 4
Two–year project will add third lane in each direction of I-694
ROSEVILLE, Minn. — Construction of a third general purpose lane in each direction of Interstate 694 between Rice Street in Little Canada and Lexington Avenue in Arden Hills begins Monday, April 4. In addition to rebuilding the interstate and adding a new lane in each direction, the project includes:
- Rebuilding interstate ramps at Lexington Avenue, Victoria Street and Rice Street
- Opening the right lane of the bridge from northbound I-35E to westbound I-694. The right lane will become an exit-only lane to Rice Street
- Improving storm water drainage throughout the corridor
As work begins on the westbound lanes, motorists will encounter nighttime lane closures in each direction of the interstate as crews widen the roadway and prepare to shift traffic in June. At the same time, the ramp from Rice Street to westbound I-694 will close for the construction season.
During construction, MnDOT will keep two lanes of traffic open in each direction. Temporary lanes around the construction zone will separate traffic from construction work. The two lanes of westbound traffic will be separated by a concrete median barrier, which will require motorists to choose a lane at the beginning of the work zone.
Drivers in the left lane will be unable to exit the interstate between Rice Street and Lexington Avenue. Traffic in the right lane will be able to exit the freeway as usual. Eastbound traffic lanes will not be separated by barrier.
Next year’s work will rebuild the eastbound lanes with the same traffic restrictions.
When complete in November 2017, the project will improve driver safety and accessibility, increase capacity to lessen congestion and provide smoother road surfaces. In addition, the new roadway will enhance the movement of freight and support economic development.
