Eastbound I-694 weekend closure, bridge painting resumes in Fridley, New Brighton
Five bridges being painted between East River Road and I-35W
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – With the Minnesota State Fair and Labor Day weekend behind us, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will resume painting five bridges between East River Road in Fridley and I-35W in New Brighton.
The end of the bridges over the eastbound side of the interstate will be painted this weekend and the eastbound interstate closes at 10 p.m. tonight between Hwy 252 and I-35W. It will reopen to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12.
The five bridges being painted are (from west to east below):
- BNSF Railroad bridge (just east of East River Road)
- Main St. NE
- Long Lake Road (Co Rd 45)
- Minnesota Commercial Railroad bridge (just west of 5th Ave.)
- 5th Ave. NW bridge (Co Rd 77/Old Hwy 8)
During the closure motorists will be directed to a signed detour north on Hwy 252, east on Hwy 610 and Hwy 10 and then back south on I-35W. And although the ramps leading to the eastbound interstate will close, roads crossing the interstate will remain open. Drivers will need to find an alternate route to reach destinations along the eastbound interstate.
There will be four additional weekend closures needed to finish painting the bridges. One additional weekend is needed to finish painting the bridges over the eastbound lanes and three weekends are needed to paint the section of bridges over the westbound lanes. For a detailed schedule of the closures please visit the I-694 bridge painting website at mndot.gov/metro/projects/i694bridges/.
Painting bridges extends their life and helps maintain and preserve our valuable bridge system. It also improves their appearance.
