Second and final year of Hwy 65 Reduced Conflict Intersection construction in East Bethel, Ham Lake begins Thursday, April 18

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The second and final year of a project to reduce fatalities and injuries caused by broadside crashes begins Thursday, April 18, 2019.  Crews are building the last four of six Reduced Conflict Intersections on Highway 65 in Ham Lake and East Bethel. The RCIs under construction in 2019 are at: 143rd Avenue, 153rd Avenue, 181st Avenue and Viking Boulevard. Some curb and gutter and sidewalk work also will be completed in the median of the existing RCI at 169th Avenue.

Construction will start at Viking Boulevard in East Bethel next Monday followed by the start of work at 153rd Avenue in Ham Lake in approximately two weeks. Once these intersections are completed, work will begin after the Fourth of July holiday on the final intersections at 181st Avenue and 143rd Avenue. Beginning in mid-August, crews will work at the RCI at 169th Avenue.

The RCI at Viking Boulevard and Highway 65 in East Bethel will be the first signalized RCI in Minnesota. Because Viking Boulevard has significantly more traffic than the other intersections, signals will more safely and effectively move people through the intersection.

During work on the new intersections, motorists will encounter traffic restrictions and closures. When the center median is closed, traffic will not be allowed to cross the highway. However, traffic will be able to turn right off Highway 65 or turn right from side roads onto Highway 65. Side streets that connect to Highway 65 will be closed and detoured for a period of time during the project.

Construction of the signalized RCI at Viking Boulevard and Highway 65 will require traffic restrictions and a several day closure of Viking Boulevard this year, tentatively planned for Thursday, May 16 to early Monday, May 20, 2019. While Viking Boulevard is closed, traffic will be detoured during the long weekend closure.

All work on the remaining RCIs will be completed by fall 2019.

Construction of RCIs and longer turn lanes will improve safety and mobility on the Highway 65 corridor between 85th Avenue in Spring Lake Park and Sims Road in East Bethel.
