Crews will clean and make lighting repairs in the tunnels while they are closed.
Tunnel washing serves several purposes. It cleans the tiles, which allows light to properly reflect and removes environmentally harmful materials from the walls and ceilings left by vehicle exhaust before they get in the storm sewer system. Crews capture the water used to wash the tunnels before it enters the sewer system.
Crews also will wash tunnels at Highway 55 under Minnehaha Parkway, Highway 5 at Fort Snelling and I-35E and Fifth Street in St. Paul Oct. 22-24. That work will require short-term lane closures overnight.
Motorists should plan ahead and give themselves extra time to reach their destination.
