On Aug. 18, 2012 crews moved the new Maryland Avenue Bridge to its permanent location. The bridge superstructure was built in an adjacent location moved into place with a Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SMPT) with 352 wheels. This innovative construction method reduced the amount of time that I-35E needed to be closed to replace the bridge. The SPMT moved the bridge in two sections, each weighing 1,300 tons.
