Site Development Unit

Goal

The goal of the Site Development Unit (SDU) is to provide planning, programming and design services in the following areas:

  • Safety Rest Areas and Waysides
  • Historic Roadside Properties and Waysides
  • State Entry Monuments
  • Park and Ride facilities
  • Department Building sites

Products the unit provides

The SDU provides the following products for MnDOT safety rest areas, historic roadside properties and state entry monuments:

  • Site plans from concept through to construction bid documents
  • Partnership agreements
  • Special project implementation
  • Early Notification Memos
  • Environmental Documents including Programmatic and Non-Programmatic Categorical Exclusions  (CATEXs)
  • Customer feedback reports
  • Communications documents and displays
  • Interpretive displays
  • Research documents
  • Policy documents

The SDU provides the following services for MnDOT safety rest areas, historic roadside properties and state entry monuments:

  • Investment planning and programming
  • Operations and maintenance guidance
  • Compliance analysis with applicable federal and state laws and regulations
  • Facility and special project partnership development
  • Project management for design and construction
  • Early Notification Memo preparation and distribution
  • Early Notification Memo responses for facilities impacted by other MnDOT projects
  • Environmental Documents preparation
  • Design services
  • Construction administration
  • Responses to customer and other stakeholders

  • Advocacy

In addition, the SDU provides professional landscape architectural services including:

  • Project management for non-corridor related architectural and site projects
  • Layout, site, grading and planting plan and specification development for department facilities
  • Visual Impact Assessments for non-corridor related architectural and site projects
