MnDOT, MDA release Clean Fuels Standards report

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Departments of Transportation and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture today jointly released the agencies’ Summary Report on a Clean Fuel Standard in Minnesota.

The report summarizes the stakeholder engagement process that began in October 2021 when Governor Tim Walz directed MDA and MnDOT to identify shared goals and opportunities for a Clean Fuel Standard. Between October and January of 2022, there were 33 stakeholder and public meetings with more than 470 total attendees from across the state, representing a range of economic, business, agriculture and environmental sectors.

Clear support for a CFS was expressed across stakeholder groups, with an understanding of the urgent need for climate action and a desire for Minnesota to lead the Midwest in these critical investments. The engagement process also identified contingencies and concerns that remain, including costs, timing, and approval processes.

Clean Fuel Standards are currently being explored at the state level across the United States. While a CFS alone would not be sufficient to meet Minnesota’s greenhouse gas reduction goals, it should continue to be a part of our broader climate efforts as a technology-neutral opportunity to spur innovation, harness investment in a clean economy, and create jobs for Minnesotans.
