Westbound Interstate 494/Wakota Bridge lane and ramp closures in Newport and South St Paul begin July 5
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Motorists will encounter lane and ramp closures on westbound Interstate 494, Wakota Bridge spanning the Mississippi River, as crews continue bridge resurfacing work on Tuesday, July 5.
Beginning at approximately 9 p.m., Tuesday, July 5 westbound I-494 will be reduced to two lanes between Maxwell Avenue in Newport and Hardman Avenue in South St Paul.
Also beginning the evening of Tuesday, July 5, the following ramps will be closed and detoured:
- Maxwell Avenue ramp to westbound I-494 - Detour is Maxwell Avenue, Glen Road, northbound 61 to westbound I-494
- Westbound I-494 ramp to Hardman Avenue - Detour is to exit at Concord Street
The westbound I-494 ramp to Hardman Avenue is expected to reopen on Saturday, July 16. The lane closures and the Maxwell Avenue ramp to westbound I-494 are anticipated to reopen on Friday, July 29.
In addition, there will be some short-term closures of the bike and pedestrian trail on westbound I-494 beginning at 6 a.m. Wednesday, July 6 through Thursday July 7 and again for two days sometime in August for concrete barrier work. Specific dates in August have not been determined due to material delivery. During the trail closures, there will not be a detour route available, so trail users should seek alternative routes.
To accelerate the road work and lessen traffic impacts, crews are scheduled to work during day and night shifts, including some Saturdays to complete the project. The project is expected to be complete by the end of August, weather permitting.
