Work zone LTAP training and Northland ATSSA conference

With the upcoming construction season fast approaching, State Aid would like to highlight the following trainings and conferences on temporary traffic control and work zone safety.

Minnesota Local Technical Assistance Program

The Minnesota Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) is hosting two (2) upcoming trainings on work zone safety and temporary traffic control – a five (5) part series on the Minnesota Temporary Traffic Control Field Manual (online), and a Work Zone Safety Overview for Managers and Lead Workers (in-person).

Introduction to the Minnesota Temporary Traffic Control Field Manual for Highway Workers Webinar Series (Online)

This webinar series will introduce team members to the Minnesota Temporary Traffic Control Field Manual and how to apply the concepts, standards and key elements required for temporary traffic control, safety, and flagging.

  • February 8, 2024 from 8 a.m. - 10 a.m.
    • Part 1 - Introduction and General Provisions for All Temporary Traffic Controls
  • February 14, 2024 from 8 a.m. - 9 a.m.
    • Part 2 - Typical Applications for Two-Lane Two-Way Roadways
  • February 22, 2024 from 8 a.m. - 9 a.m.
    • Part 3 - Typical Applications for Multi-Lane Highways
  • February 28, 2024 from 8 a.m. - 9 a.m.
    • Part 4 - Miscellaneous Applications for Moving Operations and Bike and Pedestrian Considerations
  • March 6, 2024 from 8 a.m. - 9 a.m.
    • Part 5 - Flagging Overview

Participants will need the Minnesota Temporary Traffic Control Field Manual for reference during each webinar.

NOTE: participants are encourage to take Work-Zone Safety Orientation Online Course (free) prior to attending the series. This is an on-demand online course that can be taken anytime, at your own pace.

Work Zone Safety Overview for Managers and Lead Workers (In-person)

This two-hour seminar provides an overview of basic traffic control and safety procedures for short-term work zones. The latest in traffic control devices and safety devices are presented, including several unique approaches to traffic control and methods for reducing risk and liability.

The Northland ATSSA “How-To” Conference, March 11-13

The American Traffic Safety Service Association (ATSSA) Northland “How To” Conference is March 11-13, 2024 in Fargo, North Dakota, and will focus on training and education for industry professionals involved in the selection, inspection or maintenance of all types of pavement markings, traffic signs, and temporary (work zone) traffic control. Two (2) of these sessions will focus specifically on temporary traffic control and work zone training.

Traffic Control 101 (Preconference Workshop)

This workshop will cover low-volume/low-speed roadways (Field Manual) and traffic control fundamentals.

Minnesota Work Zone Training Initiatives (Breakout Session)

MnDOT and SRF developed a work zone traffic control training plan that provides insight and direction on how to develop a robust training program that addresses the needs of all public agencies as well as private companies that work on or near the roadway in Minnesota. This plan is being implemented by both MnDOT and the Minnesota Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP). Learn about the status of this training and how your agency can take advantage of training to improve work zone traffic controls and safety for both workers and the traveling public.
