History and significance

Overlooking Mille Lacs Lake, Bridge 3355 carries U.S. 169 across White Fish Creek. The bridge was built in 1921 as a concrete-slab span with solid concrete railings. In 1939 the bridge was widened as part of a general improvement of U.S. 169 along Mille Lacs Lake, which included an extensive roadside-beautification and wayside-development component undertaken by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) as part of New Deal work relief efforts during the Great Depression. In keeping with the New Deal's labor-intensive, work-relief aesthetic, the CCC adorned the bridge with meticulous granite stonework. Bridge 3355 is significant as a rare example of an ornamental concrete-slab bridge with elaborate, well-executed ornamental stonework.

Rehabilitation activities

The rehabilitation, completed in 2019, repaired the stone masonry, installed a new concrete deck, and added an inner steel traffic rail.
