Currently, there is no documented evidence that shows noise from vehicles is reduced due to this sign. MnDOT would like to assess the effectiveness of these signs.

Objective

This research will investigate the effectiveness of the Vehicle Noise Law Enforced Signs in reducing noise from vehicles. The result of this research would help in determining if there is a need to modify the Vehicle Noise Laws Enforced sign language in the Traffic Engineering Manual (TEM).

Previous research

A few general noise level modeling and measurement studies were found in the literature review. No relevant references on the presence of signage and effectiveness.

Strategic priorities

  • Asset Management:
Research results could improve general criteria, fabrication, and installation guidance in traffic engineering manual.

Expected outcomes

  • New or improved technical standard, plan, or specification
  • New or improved manual, handbook, guidelines, or training
  • New or improved policy, rules, or regulations

Expected benefits

  • Change or inform a MNDOT policy
