Small business hands-on training
MnDOT Office of Civil Rights offers hands-on training to certified small businesses interested in pursuing opportunities on MnDOT contracts. Trainings will cover technical subject matter and allow firms to grow their expertise in highway heavy scopes of work such as erosion control, pavement striping, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) concrete work. Training will be conducted by industry experts, and upon completion, participants will be positioned to expand their businesses to compete for opportunities on MnDOT contracts.

and other safety regulations impact your worker responsibilities, day-to-day operations, and
business development.
• Focus on safety regulations for small highway construction companies

• Understand personal protection equipment requirements
• Earn OSHA 30 Certification
OSHA 30 certification enables you to carry out work safely and successfully on MnDOT contracts and projects

Learn first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including how to use an automated external defibrillator.
• Gain expertise in delivering first aid, CPR, and AED
• Become familiar with the hazards and medical emergencies on highway construction sites
• Earn American Heart Association First Aid/CPR/AED certification

MnDOT hands-on pavement striping training is a two-day course designed for firms interested in breaking into pavement striping and building their areas of expertise. Course topics include plan reading, cost estimating, and equipment operation. The course is taught by industry experts and will provide participants with practical experience and insight into the business aspects of pavement striping.

Gain the technical skills to successfully pursue construction subcontracts in seeding and erosion control and prevention.
• Train in the classroom and in a field exercise

• Learn to estimate the costs to comply with permits and contracts
• Take the MnDOT Certified Installers for Construction Activities exam

Certified small businesses can receive free training in construction site management. Learn the requirements of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) general construction permit for stormwater discharge. Bid as a prime contractor who meets the NPDES permit requirements and can oversee the construction project from start to finish.
• Understand the environmental impacts of construction activity
• Learn general NPDES permit requirements including erosion prevention and sediment control
• Learn dewatering requirements
• Understand inspections and maintenance requirements and timeframes
• Take the exam and earn a Construction Site Manager Certification through the University of Minnesota Erosion and Stormwater Management Program
Eligibility: All Certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprises, Targeted Group Businesses, and Veteran-owned businesses are eligible to attend this two-day training.

Understand what is necessary to install, inspect, maintain and repair highway barrier systems. Materials presented are specific to Minnesota. Classroom content will refer to:
• MNDOT Standard Plans, Plates, and Specifications and other MNDOT typical practices;
• Supplemental information from national testing and research programs; and
• Guidance from the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide and FHWA.
Participants will learn:
• When is a barrier the best choice for treating a hazardous condition?
• How do different systems perform under crash test conditions?
• How does a designer select a barrier system and design it to fit a specific location?
Eligibility: People with design responsibilities within MnDOT and local transportation agencies. (A separate two-day session is available for installers, inspectors and maintenance workers.)
