I-94 closed this weekend between Interstate 35E and Hwy 61 in St. Paul for demolition of Kellogg Blvd./3rd Street bridge over the interstate

ROSEVILLE, Minn. –Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, both directions of Interstate 94 will close between Highway 52/Lafayette Freeway/East 7th Street and Highway 61/Mounds Blvd. in St. Paul through 5 a.m. Mon, Dec. 9, according to the city of St. Paul and the Minnesota Department of Transportation. There also will be no access to eastbound I-94 from I-35E or from cross streets in the closure area. Westbound I-94 traffic will be able to exit I-94 at Highway 61/Mounds Boulevard. Eastbound I-94 motorists will be able to exit I-94 at 7th Street and Highway 52/Lafayette Freeway. Mounds Boulevard local traffic will be able to enter eastbound and westbound I-94.

The closure will allow city of St. Paul construction crews to remove the Kellogg Blvd./3rd Street bridge over the interstate east of downtown St. Paul. Demolition crews will work throughout the weekend to remove the bridge and clean up demolition debris before the interstate is reopened on Monday morning. Nearby residents and businesses will experience significant construction noise around the clock, including jack hammering and trucks hauling debris.
During the I-94 closure, motorists will follow signed detours:

  • Eastbound I-94: North on I-35E, east on I-694 and south on I-694 to the I-94/I-494/I-694 interchange in Woodbury.
  • Westbound I-94: North on I-694, east on I-694 and south on I-35E to westbound I-94.

The city of St Paul is replacing the Kellogg Blvd./3rd Street bridge to address the need for a more reliable connection to the city that will accommodate people walking, biking, taking transit, and driving. The project is expected to take three years.
We appreciate your patience during bridge demolition. Plan ahead by checking 511, and give yourself additional time to reach your destination.
