History and significance
The Island Canal Bridge is a Bedstead pony truss bridge constructed in 1906. It carries a pedestrian/bicycle trail over the South Channel (Island Canal) in Saint Paul’s Phalen Park. Bridge L8789 is significant as an excellent example of a Bedstead truss, which is an uncommon bridge type in Minnesota, and for its association with the Saint Paul Foundry Company, an important Minnesota bridge manufacturer.
