Short Hwy 61 traffic delays Aug. 8 at CP Rail bridge south of Red Wing
RED WING, Minn. – Motorists near the Highway 61 bridge over the Canadian Pacific Railway south of Red Wing will encounter short-term traffic delays Aug. 8 during daytime hours while construction crews place beams on the new bridge, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
On Thursday, Aug. 8, crews will be setting up the crane and setting five beams from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Traffic will remain open during the work, but delays will occur to allow the crane space on the road to lift beams from a delivery truck and set them on the new bridge.
During that time, the flagging operation will work this way:
- Workers will reduce traffic to one lane to allow space for the crane to be set up in the northbound Highway 61 lanes. Northbound and southbound traffic will take turns on the open single lane as directed by the workers.
- Traffic may experience delays of 5-10 minutes when a beam is being lifted and set. This will occur five times during the day as the beams are delivered to the site.
- Workers will reopen single-lane traffic to take turns in between beam deliveries and settings.
The new Highway 61 bridge over the Canadian Pacific Railway is being constructed to the north of the existing bridge, which allows traffic during construction. The original bridge was built in 1955 and remains in use during construction. It will be removed in the fall after traffic switches to the new bridge.
The project is expected to be completed October 2024. The contractor for the $10.2 million project is Redstone Construction, LLC.
