Traffic safety improvements on Highway 169 near Garden City starting June 17

MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be adding traffic barrels, rumble strips, and delineators to the intersection of Highway 169 near Garden City on June 17 to reduce motorist speeds and improve safety. The changes will be accompanied by a reduced 45 MPH speed zone.
With ongoing reconstruction of Highway 60 through Lake Crystal, Highway 169 and County Road 13 serve as the designated detour route. To accommodate the higher traffic volumes and improve safety near the intersection of Highway 169 and County Road 13, the speed limit will be lowered from 60 MPH to 45 MPH in both directions for approximately one mile.
The reduced speed limit will take effect as soon as the new signage is installed.
This temporary speed limit will be enforced 24 hours a day and is expected to remain in place until the Highway 60 Lake Crystal reconstruction project is completed this fall.
Additional recent safety enhancements at the Highway 169/County Road 13 intersection include:

  • Flashing LED “Intersection Ahead” warning signs on Highway 169 in both directions
  • A portable message board on County Road 13 reminding drivers that cross traffic does not stop
  • A portable message board on southbound Highway 169 reminding drivers to slow down
  • Rumble strips on County Road 13, in advance of the new LED-enhanced stop sign
  • Rumble strips on Highway 169 in both directions in advance of the intersection of County Road 13

MnDOT reminds motorists to stay alert, be patient, obey work zone speed limits, and only proceed through intersections when safe.
The Highway 60 Lake Cystal project includes reconstructing the highway from Blue Earth County Road 20 to Blue Earth County Road 112, utility replacement in coordination with the City of Lake Crystal, bridge repairs, intersection improvements, a new pedestrian trail, and lighting installation.
