Freight Network Optimization Tool

The Freight Network Optimization Tool (FNOT) is a tool that allows users to analyze and visualize the Minnesota intermodal freight network, and explore optimization scenarios for network improvements. Directed by state legislation, the goals for the FNOT are in part to improve transportation and supply chain efficiency, reduce supply chain bottlenecks, and develop strategic information to support economic development. The tool was developed by a team of consultants, with input from MNIT, MnDOT, and MnDEED.

The FNOT application will be an online resource that will support both public and private sector users by providing the ability to analyze and visualize freight data, run optimization scenarios to explore market demands for new freight facilities or services, and examine supply chain improvements.

Exploring opportunities

FNOT’s network optimization capabilities will allow users to query several freight transportation databases and explore “what if” scenarios for opportunities to:

  • Lower shipping costs & increase economic competitiveness
  • Identify market opportunities and support projected growth
  • Improve supply chain network performance, address constraints & inefficiencies
  • Reduce highway congestion, emissions & truck-related crashes, while lessening road maintenance & capital expenditures
  • Anticipate impact of changes in economic conditions or new infrastructure investments
