Minnesota Rail Crossing Safety Action Plan

Minnesota Rail Crossing Safety Action Plan

BNSF train crossing an intersection

The Rail Crossing Safety Action Plan will help Minnesota increase safety where rails cross roads, sidewalks, and trails. There are more than 4,000 public rail grade crossings in Minnesota, and 166 crashes at rail grade crossings in the past five years, resulting in 22 fatalities and 68 injuries. The Rail Crossing Safety Action Plan will use input gathered from stakeholders to:

  • Identify rail grade crossing safety issues.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of current prioritization processes.
  • Evaluate and recommend crossing improvement strategies.
