Culvert Pipe Installation
- Verify size, type, and length of pipe. Ensure proper class or wall thickness.
- Check pipe for approval stamp and/or certification and inspect for any subsequent damage and defects. Delay the installation of defective sections until repaired or replaced.
- Review plans, control stakes, and adjacent terrain for proper drainage.
- Check for potential conflicts with existing and proposed underground utilities.
- Check trench for proper width and slope protection as per OSHA regulations.
- Ensure that Geotextile is placed as required.
- Check bed for proper bedding material, compaction, and grade.
- Ensure tongue end of concrete pipe is in direction of flow and lap in metal pipe is positioned so that flow is overlap.
- Verify that concrete pipe joints are snug, properly sealed, and tied when required. Verify that all lift holes are plugged and sealed. Verify that mortar is 3 parts mortar sand and 1-part approved mortar cementing material.
- Determine pay length while installing pipe.
- Verify the backfill material meets contract specifications; sample and test as necessary.
- Require that backfill be placed in lifts of 8 inches or less and meets moisture and compaction compliance before placing the next lift.
- When complete, verify that the pipe is in proper alignment and undamaged.
- Maintain daily records that include hours worked, weather, trenching, placement, and backfilling information; item, pay length, location, heat numbers, crew, equipment, and other information having relevance to culverts.
