Scale Operation
- The Contractor shall provide certified weights or weigh Material on calibrated, approves scales. The Contractor shall give the Engineer a copy of the inspection certificate.
- Verify the scale certification is current.
- The Contractor may use computerized loader bucket scales when the quantity of material used in the bid item list is 5000 tons or less.
- The Contractor shall equip loader bucket scales with an onboard computer that produces weigh tickets.
- The Contractor shall load trucks on a level loading area and with the loader scale in dynamic mode and operate the loader scale in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines.
- The computerized loader bucket scale must be accurate to within 1.0 percent of the true weight of the applied load throughout the range of use.
- Before the first use of scales on a Project, the Contractor shall calibrate in accordance with 1901.8; if using a loader scale, before use or any time the scale is recertified, the Contractor shall perform a comparison test in accordance with 1901.8.
- Review “Uniform Load Establishment and Method of Quantity Verification” section 3.1.1.5.1 of Contract Administration Manual (CAM) and Uniform Load Documentation – Spot Checks section 3.1.1.5.2 of the CAM.
- If truck loads observed are suspected to be overweight inform your chief inspector and/or Project Engineer immediately.
